Dressing for April Showers: A Guide

Hey BOS! It’s April again, and with this spring month comes many rainy days. Often, when we check the weather app and spot rain in the forecast, we think it's not worth wasting a good outfit on. Gloomy doesn't have to mean that, though. I am here to offer an alternative perspective!

Let’s start with the first layer, pants. My personal recommendation is a dark wash jean or a colorful jean (one that doesn’t bleed!). Additionally, a pair of dark pants (not corduroy, leather, or linen) like the one below is a great option. Just remember that dark is key since marks from the rain won’t show as harshly, if at all! If it's a warmer day, throw on a skirt or dress with some tights (optional).

The next step is the top layer. Almost all tops work for rainy weather, though I would recommend a button down, cardigan, sweater, sweatshirt, or long sleeve for colder weather, and tanks or short-sleeves for warmer weather. Feel free, especially if you haven’t already with the pants, to bring in a pop of color through your top. Brighten up April showers with fun colors and patterns!

We now have our base layer and need some shoes. My number one option for a rainy day, through both cold and warm weather, is Hunter Boots. Their color options are perfect for all seasons, and work great with jeans, pants, shorts, dresses, and skirts. Take the following photo, for example, where green Hunters are paired with a grey mini dress. Style this outfit with a lightweight rain coat and an umbrella, and you are good to go!

This brings me to my next layer, the coat! I have been loving trench coats recently, both long and short. However, if that is not your thing, no need to fret! There are countless options to fit your personal style. Check out pieces from Ralph Lauren, Barbour, and Reformation, for perfect rainy-weather wear.

Do you normally carry a tote bag to class, but hate when the fabric gets wet? Invest in a nylon tote, such as a Lacoste, Longchamp, or North Face. Below is the Lacoste tote in light pink, an absolute dream bag for spring.

We’re almost done! Possibly the most crucial aspect of dressing for April showers is the umbrella. It also happens to be one of the cutest accessories to an outfit. Don’t dread carrying around an umbrella, embrace it! Purchase a colorful one with a pattern to spice up your outfit, or keep it classy and simple with a sleek and neutral design. Personally, I am loving a clear umbrella right now!

Last, but certainly not least, the hat. Feel free to keep the hair out, but if you want that extra layer, this is the perfect opportunity for a baseball cap. Again, keep the material color dark to avoid rain spots!

Rain is not gloomy; it’s nourishing to the Earth and all the living creatures on it. Treat a rainy day as a way to dress differently, but still fashionably. And make everyday a good day, even the “gloomy” days.
