Beauty Guide: Curly Hair
Just add water and the curls start to appear. When it comes to my hair, the only thing I need to go full Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City is water. Sophomore year, puberty hit me like a truck and my hair was never the same. Curls. I had no idea what to do with them. At first, I made the horrible mistake of brushing them since I was used to my wavy hair. BIG MISTAKE. I ended up looking like Hagrid from Harry Potter. If you have curly hair or even wavy hair and want to enhance your curls, using the right products and techniques will make all the difference!
When you have curly hair, it is best to only brush your hair after the shower when it is wet. Other than that, DO NOT TOUCH THE BRUSH. Although it only takes water for my curls to appear, I love using curl enhancers that add extra shine and boost to make them look amazing. For shampoo and conditioner, I have always used Organix Coconut Curls shampoo and conditioner or Aussie Miracle Curls shampoo and conditioner. These shampoos moisturize my hair and make my curls soft and sleek. When I am out of the shower, I first brush all the way through my wet hair and then use a towel to shake out my hair. Then, I put in Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Enhancer along with Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Controller. I put a quarter size amount of the curl enhancer in my hand and run it through my hair evenly. Once I do this, I start scrunching the curls to give them shape. Then, I take a little bit of the curl controller and focus it at the roots to give my hair shine and control the frizz. Once I’m done, I run the towel through once again and wait for my hair to dry and voila, beautiful curls.
If you have pin straight hair and really want the curly hair look, don’t worry. My favorite curling wand is the Bed Head Curlipops Tapered Curling Wand. If you want tight curls, start by sectioning your hair and curl away from your face holding the wand horizontally. Once done, shake them out and spray with hairspray. You’re good to go.
If you want some easy beach waves, section your hair and curl away from your face with the wand facing down. Add some hairspray and a little bit of texture spray and you’re set.
For my girls with the curly hair that want a sleek blowout, I suggest getting the Revlon Blow Dryer Brush or a Bio Ionic straightener. I suck at blow drying my hair, but this tool is a life saver. Turn it on, brush it through your hair, and focus on the roots at high heat and you’re done. If you’re nervous about the heat damage, add heat protectant (this product is very safe and does not damage your hair).
Some days, I don’t have the time to straighten or blow dry my hair and I want my hair to be smoother without as much curl. To achieve this look, I put my hair in a low bun. It twists the curls out of place making soft waves and keeps your hair out of your face. You can also pull out some tendrils in the front to make it look really cute. Whether you have super curly hair or not, anyone can achieve some curl. Nothing wrong with a little bounce!
