Spring 2023 Fashion Trends

Since we are over a month into 2023, it is time to predict which pieces and aesthetics will be taking over the runways and filling the streets this year.

As we saw at the close of 2022, metallics are everywhere. From the Agolde denim jeans to Glossier shimmering eye-glitter, shining seems to be the theme for the start of the new year. Loewe and Alexander McQueen showed us that industrial-inspired metal breastplates are all the rage in couture. If working chainmail or chunky glitter pieces (we are looking at you Chloé) in your closet is a bit too bold for your taste, try incorporating jackets with mixed metal hardware or a belt with a more pronounced buckle. Or even just take a page out of Hailey Bieber’s book and give those glazed nails all over your Pinterest a try.

Fun textures are also coming into focus this spring! Denim and leather are two materials that are easy to integrate into your wardrobe and won’t be going out of style any time soon. A classic white-tee paired with your go-to pair of jeans and a leather jacket? Effortlessly chic. An insider tip: shop vintage for quality and unique pieces. On the runway, sheer fabrics and feathers seem to be the most popular way to elevate looks that we might have previously seen in 2022. A feather cuff or a sheer long sleeve atop a Skims triangle bralette are just two examples on how to start. Our favorite brands, from Miu Miu to Louis Vuitton, are also shining a light on utility through the use of pockets on virtually every clothing item. Cargo pants, twill mini skirts, outerwear— pockets are everywhere.

When it comes to silhouettes, asymmetrical hems, feminine drapery, and “grunge-y” menswear pieces will be everywhere. The asymmetry that is becoming increasingly popular is probably best known in the form of skirts. From midi skirts with revealing slits up the thigh to sharply angled minis, they are meant to highlight the contours of our body in the best way! This trend of asymmetry can also be found in your typical shearling or leather jacket. Have you ever wondered why the zipper on your favorite coat is at a diagonal slant? Purely functional, but now unintentionally on trend! When it comes to feminine, draping pieces, think of classy slip dresses and silk tops that gather at the neck. They can be made more seductive with open backs, but the draping of chiffon pashmina over your shoulders is the peak of conservative elegance. Finally, as we have been seeing in the past few years, there is a true resurgence of 90s grunge fashion, and this will not change in 2023. I think that Kate Moss’s Bottega Veneta look from Milan Fashion Week is a prime example. Distressed baggy low-waisted denim or an oversized blazer are perfect but try and clean them up with a slick back bun or a pair of your smartest sneakers. The oversized look should be intentional, not sloppy.

Disclaimer: The most important “trend” to stick to would be dressing for yourself! Whatever makes you happy, comfortable, and confident is the best trend to follow. Keep this in mind as you see trending items hit the shelves... is it worth breaking the bank every month just to keep up with what might be in? Though fashion is ever-changing, it is also highly repetitive, so pay attention to what is already in your closet and the ways that they can be altered to better fit the times!
