Dressing for Business When There is No Business to Attend to

My outfits often seem to forecast my mindset for the day. My motivation to leave my room and be productive is triggered by the simple styling of my slacks or stepping into my overworn Mary Janes. In the rare cases when I throw on a pair of sweats to go to class, the hours in the day cut from twelve to six as I find myself succumbing to my bed and binging Suits. Knowing my homebody tendencies, I’ve created a rule for myself to maximize my productivity: “dress for business even when there is no business to attend to.” And no, you certainly do not have to be a CSOM student to achieve this status!

One of the best tricks I have to carry myself with confidence and motivation throughout the day is feeling good about my outfit. Even if it might not correspond with what my classmates are wearing, when I’m happy with my outfit then my mental state is sunshine and rainbows (for the most part)! My favorite way to elevate a simple outfit is through the use of slacks– my more comfortable alternative to jeans. Slacks don’t have to translate to formal wear; I often style a patterned tank or a moto denim jacket to complete the outfit. My favorite pair of slacks, one that you will probably see me wear way too much, are thrifted low-waist & wide-leg brown pants from the brand Express. While the pants themselves might look plain, they serve as the perfect canvas to dress an outfit up or down. Plus, slacks already come with a level of style that you don’t have to put much more effort into feeling put together.

Another easy way to feel your best is by putting intention into the small accents. When I want to take my outfit up a notch, I'll tie a ribbon to the belt buckle of my pants or style one into my hair. Or, I’ll pull out one of my statement necklaces to complement the neckline of my top. When I’m wearing a skirt, I love to put on a pair of leg warmers (whether it’s summer or winter) as a unique way to top off my outfit. Putting thought into the little details is a great way to feel your best!

Dressing up for the day is a fun way to psychologically and physically prepare for the agenda ahead! One of my favorite ways to gather inspiration is by creating a Pinterest board of the vibes you want to give off through your fashion. Even if the goal isn’t recreating the same outfits you see on screen, it’s the perfect way to get your creativity flowing. Next time you're getting ready, don’t be afraid to dress for business, even if you’re just going to class ;)
