2023 Wrapped: A Year in Fashion

From our beloved denim to bold metallics, Y2K midi skirts to headphones as a wardrobe statement, 2023 did not stray away from pushing our fashion boundaries. This year did not fail to impress in the realm of nuanced fashion trends that we absolutely love (or don’t). Let’s recap this year’s top ten hottest takes that made the year in fashion.

1. Pink

Let’s be completely honest, the Barbie Movie of 2023 had us all in a chokehold, so much so in the fashion industry that Vogue Arabia claimed it as 2023’s Hottest Fashion Trend. Between the bubblegum and rose hues, the color pink dominated the runway and red carpets. And if you’re anything like me and tried to make this bold color work but miserably failed, just know we can still channel our inner Margot Robbie Barbie anytime we want in our hearts.

2. Metallics

This year, our inner child started screaming at the sudden uptick of all things shimmer and metallic. A metallic pant paired with a slim tank and blazer makes for a chic, elegant look for any event, especially one that will impress your friends and family at any holiday get-together. Try it out, just don’t overdo it with your past Justice circa 2012 indulgences.

3. Fashion Tech

If you thought accessories were all for show, I suggest you give out this year’s hot over-the-ear headphones trend a go, which is finally giving respect to those headphones we spent all of that money on because the small ones don’t stay in our ears. Not only does this trend let you listen to your favorite songs while helping tune out the world on your walk to class or to coffee, it’s also a fashion statement. And if you were willing to drop the hefty bag on the raging Airpod Max, I’m happy to inform you that you’re keeping up with the fashion trends, whether you purchased them because you were aware of this or just needed a new pair of headphones.

4. Bold Denim

As we all know, not only is denim a timeless staple, but its cyclical nature provides an explanation for the trending 90s style Levi’s high-rise jeans. This year, we saw a bit of a twist on your average denim look, embracing the form of this fabric in tops and skirts, even paired with more denim. A classic denim on denim never fails (unless the denims don’t match, then stray away).

5. An Iconic Shorts and Tights Combo

You either love it or you hate it, but after Kendall Jenner’s November 2022 look with a Bottega Sweater, tights, and micro shorts, the look is sensational for this year’s trends recap. Although it might be a little bold for a day-to-day look, taking on the night in this daring style will be sure to catch any eye in a room.

6. Y2K Midi Skirts

If you didn’t try on a midi skirt this past summer, seriously what were you waiting for? Not only were skirts flooding the racks of Urban Outfitters along with every other 90’s trend that cycled its way back to 2023, they elevated any top you could think of. We are so used to jeans, even mini skirts are a thing of the past. Midi skirts are modest, chic, and are sure to recreate that Gigi Hadid Boho Style vibe.

7. Shoulder Pads

Yes, your grandmother probably rocked them back in her day and yes, they are back and trendy as ever. You either love them or hate them, but we can all agree on the fact that while they may be a little noticeable, they structure and elevate your look, and they might not be that bad!

8. Corsets

Let’s get one thing straight, the classic Urban Outfitters corset (you know which one) had its moment, and that moment is definitely now over. Needless to say, corsets have proven to come back better than ever this year, and they are coming to stay. Their versatility and differentiation make them irresistible, especially for a night out. Though let’s be clear, if you see a dupe of the Urban Outfitters one on Amazon, even for twenty bucks, do not buy it.

9. Dark Hues

Whether you think it’s goth or not, an all-black or dark look is easy to pull together–and it looks sleek. Whether you’re rocking athleisure or black jeans and a blazer, the subtleness of the color will say way more about you than any average light-wash denim look.

10. Seen But Not

If you’re eager to go a little more risqué, but not sure where to start, the sheer or lace mesh with any intimate delicates is certainly the way to go. The wearable lace or mesh fabric that shows a little skin is perfectly contrasted with some delicacy that will leave you feeling confident and cute, and is the perfect solution to your outfit dilemmas. A tasteful peek is sure to make an iconic statement.

As I said, this year did not fail in the fashion world, and I think a lot of these trends will carry over into 2024. As for the future, I am excited to see how we will top these trends, but I don’t doubt that we will, and neither should you. As Harry Winston once said, “People will stare, make it worth their while.”
