Toe the Line: Flip Flops in Fall

School is back in session, and between packed schedules, changing leaves, and weekend tailgates, one thing is certain: BC loves its flip flops. Whether it’s Rainbows, Havaianas, or the occasional rogue Old Navy pair, these sandals aren’t going anywhere. Rain, shine, or even snow, you can always spot them around campus.

Sadly, we can’t ignore the facts. Fall is coming, whether your feet like it or not. And you will have to decide: Are those flip flops coming with you? Here at BC, the question is less if they will follow us into autumn– it’s how. Because flip flops aren’t just shoes. They’re proof that convenience always beats common sense, and they’ve become part of the unofficial BC dress code.

The case for flip flops is simple: chic, beachy, boho convenience. Slipping them on to run to the Rat or dash to class is all fine and good. But intentionality is what can elevate the sandal and what takes it from casual to the culmination of the carefree vibe.

Saltwater waves with cuffed jeans and a corded sweater hit the perfect fisherman vibe when paired with braided leather flip flops. Leaning into the coastal, vineyard, Cape-y nature of it all is so BC and, in fact, so Kennedy.

Havaianas with a long skirt and layers– lots of layers– lean dreamy and California coastal. Funk them up with an anklet or, if you’re feeling daring, a toe ring. Dress them up with a fall nail color (deep red, plum, even a moody brown) and suddenly those flip flops don’t look out of place at all. They’re less “forgot to change shoes” and more “seasonal contrarian chic.”

Maximize. Minimize. Polish. Bejewel. Live your open-toe dream. Just keep the rest of yourself warm.

And for the less daring, who might have left the Roxy flops back home this fall, opt for their warmer cousins. A Birkenstock clog, a boat shoe (a recent favorite), or a flat will do just fine as a slip-on alternative. They’re just as versatile, and perhaps even more welcome among the shoe snobs once the rain turns to snow.

At the end of the day, flip flops here at BC aren’t really about the weather. They’re about the collective choice to stretch summer just a little too long and to value comfort over logic. They’re a campus quirk that refuses to die, no matter how cold it gets. So as the wind picks up across the Heights and Vejas begin to dominate wardrobes, don’t be surprised to see flip flops holding their ground.

BC loves flip flops. And against all logic, that loyalty doesn’t change with the season.
