Elevate Your Style: The Power of Accessories

With new trends emerging seemingly every week, keeping your outfits stylish can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry – buying the latest hard-to-style top isn’t the only way to stay trendy. There’s still hope for those who swear by a simple white tee and jeans. The secret? Accessories.

Accessories are the perfect way to express your personality without needing to trek down Newbury Street every weekend in search of the next big thing. They can take even the simplest outfit from basic to effortlessly cool. I’ve put together a guide to the best accessories to help elevate your look – no full wardrobe renovation required.

The Perfect Bag

Finding the perfect bag can feel like a daunting task - but it doesn’t have to be. I recommend having three go-to staples: a casual purse, a going-out bag, and a tote.

For my casual purse, I love the Brandy Melville basic brown shoulder bag. It fits everything I need for a shopping day or a casual date, and it complements just about every outfit. For a going-out option, I go for something eye-catching yet functional – like the Marc Jacobs star bag. With its silver star-studded strap draping effortlessly across your shoulder, it’s the kind of piece that earns compliments all night.

Finding the right college tote, however, was the biggest challenge. I wanted something chic that could also hold my 16-inch laptop (way harder than it should be). At first, I gravitated toward leather totes that gave off a “city cool girl” vibe. But they were often too small, overpriced, or left color stains on my clothes. Plus, leather isn’t ideal for Boston’s harsh winter.

Just when I was about to give up and settle for a classic Longchamp, I stumbled upon the Badgley Mischka Diana Weekender Bag. The faux leather is far more comfortable and weather-resistant than a typical leather bag, and the silver accents paired with the textured material give it a chic edge. Best of all? It finally fits my laptop and has a secure closure.

Bag Charms

Once you’ve found your perfect bag, it is time to personalize it. Bag charms are a stylish, fun way to showcase your personality. If your vibe is more classic, opt for a dainty gold or silver charm for an elegant touch. Feeling bold? Try colorful charms or even handmade clay ones that reflect your creativity. Or, if you’re like me, you could fall for the internet hype and add a Labubu to your tote.

Kitten Heels

Shoes are one fashion addiction I’ll never quit – and honestly, why should we? They’re a fabulous confidence booster. Kitten heels, in particular, have the fashion world in a chokehold – and for good reason. In a walkable city like Boston, why should we torture our feet with 4-inch stilettos when we can look just as chic in a 1-inch heel?

If you’ve been working hard and can treat yourself, I recommend investing in a designer pair that will last a lifetime. Dior makes some stunning staple kitten heels. But for those of us on a college budget, Steve Madden is a great alternative. He’s known for creating affordable designer dupes. I own the strappy Miu Miu kitten heel dupes from Steve Madden, and I’m obsessed.

Jewelry

When it comes to jewelry, there are two ways you could go - chunky or delicate.

Chunky pieces are excellent for simpler outfits when you still want to stand out. Brands like Scandivv offer bold, conversation-starting pieces that pair perfectly with a bikini on spring break or a sparkly going-out top.

On the flip side, delicate jewelry is just as impactful. Dainty necklaces that fall to your stomach beautifully complement low-cut tops. I also love a good waist chain to accompany a bikini or low-rise jeans. And yes, hand chains are making a comeback, bringing a touch of glam and edge all at once.

You don’t have to dress extravagantly to show off your personality. If you’re looking to branch out with your style, start small. These accessory tips are sure to help you elevate your look without sacrificing your authenticity.
