From a Forgotten Sewing Machine to the Runway: My Journey as a Self-Taught Designer
As I finished my clothing line, "Evolve," for the Fall 2023 Fashion Show, I reminisced on the day my love for sewing began: the day I stumbled upon my mom's forgotten sewing machine. Locked away in the closet, I would always stop and observe it whenever I opened the door. At 17, after almost 10 years of curiosity, I picked it up, dusted it off, and took it apart to understand its mechanics. Little did I know that this small but mighty machine would lead me to one of my lifelong passions. I could even attribute the reason I joined and helped execute the vision of a college fashion club to my mom’s machine.
Let's Get To Sewing!
With no formal training and only YouTube, I began experimenting. It started with the creation of a small handbag, and then I worked my way up to more complex seams and even a clothing line.
"Evolve" wasn't just about presenting a line for the Boston College Fashion Show; it was a representation of my passions and the journey of it. Every piece I created was meant to reflect a deep love for timeless elegance, dark tones, and durability. The process was far from glamorous, I mean, who has time to sew a line during the academic year? From the fittings to the alterations, designing a collection takes a vision but most importantly, a determination and patience to learn from your mistakes. There were many times when a seam popped, the machine jammed, and don't get me started on the countless needles I poked myself with. Yet, I wanted “Evolve” to represent individuality, which undoubtedly comes with a learning journey. My journey as a self-taught designer is not perfect but well worth it because of the moments I saw my ideas created into a real line. Through "Evolve," I've learned that passion and curiosity can take you to the most unexpected places.
Advice
As I continue to develop my path in fashion, "Evolve" remains a testament to my dreams and passion for design. If you are interested in beginning to sew, whether that be for the runway or personal projects, remember to stay curious and embrace every mistake that comes. Never underestimate where that curiosity and passion can take you. After all, "Evolve" began with just that—an abandoned sewing machine and a mind full of creative vision.
